A 5–10 MINUTE ACTIVITY
Find x at the end
Use the displayed picture, two or three large paper letter cards and a familiar spoken example. No independent word reading is required. Begin with a modeled turn; stop or simplify if the task becomes a vocabulary or motor challenge.
Show X/x and the xylophone picture. Name the letter and explain the picture word’s /z/ beginning without asking for a false /ks/ beginning.
Say box slowly. For a ready learner, move separate counters for /b/, the vowel, /k/ and /s/; three written letters do not mean three sounds.
Find the final x in adult-written box and fox. Match X/x separately if sound segmentation is not yet the right target.
Teach it. Then check.
Objective
Recognize X/x and notice its common word-final /k/ + /s/ sequence with appropriate support.
Check for learning
Can the learner locate x at the end of box and match X with x? Do not mark ‘xylophone starts /ks/’ as a correct sound statement.
Make it more accessible
Work only on case recognition and where x appears in a printed word. Leave four-sound segmentation to a ready learner.
Extend when ready
Compare the spelling and sound positions in box and xylophone, with adult explanation of the different x roles.
Try it at home
Ask a grown-up to label a box. Find the last letter and say the whole word together, then name X/x without inventing a word beginning /ks/.
