Compare lengths using the same unit
The idea
Line up the objects at one end, or measure both with identical blocks.
Step by step
- Line up the objects at one end, or measure both with identical blocks.
- Lay units end to end with no gaps or overlaps.
- Compare the counts: more of the same unit means a greater length.
Example
Two ribbons are measured with the same size blocks. Ribbon A is 3 blocks long; ribbon B is 5 blocks long. Which ribbon is longer?
Answer
B
5 is greater than 3, so ribbon B is longer when both use the same unit.
