Grade 5 · Math

Divide a unit fraction by a whole number

The idea

A unit fraction has numerator 1; begin with that part of one whole.

Step by step
  1. A unit fraction has numerator 1; begin with that part of one whole.
  2. To divide 1/b into n equal shares, split that part into n smaller pieces: each is 1/(b × n).
  3. Multiply the size of one share by the number of shares to recover the starting fraction.

Example

A ribbon of length meter is shared into 3 equal pieces. How long is each piece?

Answer

m

Divide meter into 3 equal parts. Each is 1/(2 × 3) = meter. The 3 pieces together make meter.
