Grade 1 · Reading & language

Read a final-e vowel pattern

The idea

In these examples, adding final e makes the earlier vowel say its long sound; the e is silent.

Step by step
  1. Read the short-vowel base word aloud with an adult.
  2. Add e at the end and notice the earlier vowel changes in these taught pairs.
  3. Read the new word; remember that final-e spellings also have exceptions.

Example

Add a silent final e to cap. Which word results?

Answer

cape

Cap becomes cape; a changes to its long sound in this pair.
