Match a present-tense verb to its subject

The idea

In these simple present-tense examples, one person or thing takes a verb ending in s; plural subjects take the base form.

Step by step
  1. Find the subject: who or what performs the action?
  2. Decide whether the noun subject means one or more than one.
  3. Choose the matching present-tense verb and reread the whole sentence.

Example

Choose the present-tense verb: The rabbit ___ near the gate.

Answer

hops

Rabbit means one animal, so the simple present verb is hops.
