Distinguish a concession from a rebuttal

LET’S TRY ONE

The committee proposes a later library closing time. It accepts that extra hours would require more staffing. However, a four-week trial would measure whether the added use justifies that cost.

Which statement is the concession?

Extra hours would require more staffing.

The staffing sentence acknowledges a genuine cost raised against the proposal. The trial sentence is the response to that concern.

Learning steps & teaching tips

Distinguish acknowledging another position from responding to it with reasons or evidence.

  1. Identify the proposal and the opposing concern.
  2. Find the point the writer accepts; label that concession.
  3. Separate the reason or evidence used in response; label that rebuttal.

Try it together

Write a three-sentence proposal that fairly acknowledges one objection and then answers that objection with specific evidence.

A concession acknowledges a point raised by another view. A rebuttal responds with a reason or evidence; it does not merely acknowledge the concern.
