Compare the limits of research methods

LET’S TRY ONE

A study randomly assigns 40 volunteers from one club to two map designs. It compares their wrong turns on one indoor route.

Which conclusion most clearly exceeds the design?

The better design must work best for every traveler on every outdoor route.

Random assignment helps the within-study comparison but does not make one club and route represent every setting.

Learning steps & teaching tips

Identify the particular inference limited by a study design, sample, measurement or missing data without dismissing all evidence.

  1. Identify the population, comparison and outcome actually studied.
  2. Locate the design feature that limits the proposed claim.
  3. Preserve the supported finding while qualifying what remains unknown.

Try it together

Invent a study of an everyday task. Write its sample, outcome and comparison, then explain one justified conclusion and one conclusion its method cannot establish.

Match the proposed conclusion to the actual participants, measures and comparisons; a limitation narrows an inference rather than automatically erasing every result.
