Calculate density from mass and volume

The idea

Density equals mass divided by volume: density = mass ÷ volume.

Step by step
  1. Density equals mass divided by volume: density = mass ÷ volume.
  2. Use matching units, such as grams and cubic centimeters.
  3. A larger sample can have more mass without having greater density.

Example

A sample has mass 24 g and volume 8 cm3. What is its density?

Answer

3 g/cm3

Density = 24 ÷ 8 = 3 g/cm3.
