Use net force to calculate acceleration

The idea

Find the net force, combining all stated forces with direction.

Step by step
  1. Find the net force, combining all stated forces with direction.
  2. Use acceleration = net force ÷ mass.
  3. The acceleration direction follows net force; it need not match the current velocity.

Example

A 4 kg cart experiences a net force of 12 N to the right. What is its acceleration magnitude?

Answer

3 m/s2

a = 12 ÷ 4 = 3 m/s2, directed right.
