Explain a design choice using stated priorities

The idea

Define each measure and whether a larger value is better before assigning weights.

Step by step
  1. Define each measure and whether a larger value is better before assigning weights.
  2. Apply the same stated weights to every option, then compare the resulting scores.
  3. Report ties and limitations honestly; a score reflects this model, not a universal best design.

Example

Design A: performance 90, resource score 50. Design B: performance 70, resource score 80.

The stated rule is score = × performance + × resource score. Higher values are preferred for both measures. Which design has the higher score, or are they tied?

Answer

A tie under this scoring rule

A scores × 90 + × 50 = 74. B scores × 70 + × 80 = 74. This rule gives a tie under this scoring rule; changing the weights could change the decision.
