Grade 10 · Introductory Spanish

Describe completed events with the -ar preterite

The idea

Read the requested tense and subject; these events are presented as completed in the past.

Step by step
  1. Read the requested tense and subject; these events are presented as completed in the past.
  2. Remove -ar. Add -é for yo, -aste for tú, -ó for él/ella/usted, -amos for nosotros/nosotras or -aron for ellos/ellas/ustedes.
  3. Preserve the written accents. The nosotros -amos form also occurs in the present, so use context to interpret it.

Example

Use the preterite (completed past) of hablar: Ayer, yo ___ con Ana.

Answer

hablé

The requested completed-past form for Yo is hablé. Ayer means yesterday; the regular -ar preterite endings include -é, -aste, -ó, -amos and -aron.
