Grade 12 · Introductory Spanish

Use the subjunctive for a wish about someone else

The idea

Identify the main clause Quiero and the different subject tú after que.

Step by step
  1. Identify the main clause Quiero and the different subject tú after que.
  2. Because the first person wishes for another person to do something, use the subjunctive in the que clause.
  3. For the regular verbs here, form tú with -es after an -ar stem or -as after an -er/-ir stem; check the complete sentence.

Example

Use the present subjunctive of hablar after a wish about another person: Quiero que tú ___ con calma.

Answer

hables

Quiero que introduces a wish for what tú will do. The present-subjunctive tú form of hablar is hables: Quiero que tú hables con calma.
