PICTURE WORD · Igloo

Short i, as in igloo and in

Lowercase i has a dot. Capital I may have bars or a plain stem depending on typeface; use the nearby word and your classroom model to distinguish I, l and 1.

A 5–10 MINUTE ACTIVITY

Put it in

Use the displayed picture, two or three large paper letter cards and a familiar spoken example. No independent word reading is required. Begin with a modeled turn; stop or simplify if the task becomes a vocabulary or motor challenge.

  1. Place a large paper counter in a cup and say in. Repeat the short vowel before naming the igloo picture.

  2. Match I with i and point out the lowercase dot. Compare the two forms without calling them different letters.

  3. Say in, it and sun. Move the I/i card toward examples beginning with the short vowel you modeled.

Teach it. Then check.

Objective

Match I/i and connect selected short-i examples with the written letter.

Check for learning

Say in and at with their vowel examples modeled. Can the learner indicate i after hearing in?

Make it more accessible

Use the action in and two letter cards. Skip the vocabulary-heavy picture as a sound test when it is unfamiliar.

Extend when ready

Compare in with ice and notice that the same written letter can represent different vowel sounds.

Try it at home

Use in during tidy-up, then look for i in a familiar printed word. An adult can read the whole word aloud.

ON SCREEN
