Capital M has tall sides and a middle dip. Lowercase m has repeated rounded shoulders; compare it with n rather than counting it as two separate letters.
A 5–10 MINUTE ACTIVITY
Map a moon-and-mango trail
Use the displayed picture, two or three large paper letter cards and a familiar spoken example. No independent word reading is required. Begin with a modeled turn; stop or simplify if the task becomes a vocabulary or motor challenge.
Name mango, moon and map. Model a gentle continuous /m/ and let the learner listen or join in.
Pair M and m, then place them at the start of a simple paper trail.
Read moon, sun and map in different orders. Move along the trail only for the selected /m/ beginnings.
Teach it. Then check.
Objective
Pair M/m and identify /m/ in a small named set.
Check for learning
Say map and sun. Can the learner identify map’s beginning and choose m from m and s?
Make it more accessible
Use moon and one contrasting word, with adult-provided names.
Extend when ready
With known a and t, build mat and change m to s. Blend each word with support.
Try it at home
Find m on a map, menu or familiar label. An adult can write the capital partner beside it and say the whole word.
ON SCREEN
Match the forms. Then try the word.
Choose capital/lowercase matching or the first written letter of a named picture word. Both are separate from the sound-listening activity above.
