PICTURE WORD · Nest

/n/ at the start of nest

Capital N has a diagonal joining tall sides. Lowercase n has one rounded shoulder; compare it with m after the pair is secure.

A 5–10 MINUTE ACTIVITY

Build a letter nest

Use the displayed picture, two or three large paper letter cards and a familiar spoken example. No independent word reading is required. Begin with a modeled turn; stop or simplify if the task becomes a vocabulary or motor challenge.

  1. Say nest, net and nose, naming pictures together. Model their initial /n/.

  2. Make a simple paper nest and place N and n inside as a matching pair.

  3. Say net, moon and nest. Move the n card toward target words, then compare n and m in print if useful.

Teach it. Then check.

Objective

Recognize N/n and distinguish the selected /n/ beginning from /m/.

Check for learning

Offer nose and moon orally. Can the learner find the /n/ word and select n from clearly shown case pairs?

Make it more accessible

Contrast n with a visually different letter first, then introduce m separately.

Extend when ready

Build nap with known a/p and compare map. One beginning changes while the rest of the word can stay the same.

Try it at home

Draw a nest together and label it with N/n. Read a nearby book word containing n without requiring independent decoding.
