PICTURE WORD · Panda

/p/ at the start of panda

Capital P has a tall stem and upper rounded part. Lowercase p extends below the usual writing line; compare p with b using your class model.

A 5–10 MINUTE ACTIVITY

Panda’s picnic choices

Use the displayed picture, two or three large paper letter cards and a familiar spoken example. No independent word reading is required. Begin with a modeled turn; stop or simplify if the task becomes a vocabulary or motor challenge.

  1. Name panda, pig and pan. Model the initial /p/ once while the learner listens.

  2. Pair P and p beside the panda, noticing that the letter can have a different size and position on the writing line.

  3. Pretend to pack pan and a paper pig picture, but leave out sun. Explain each choice by its spoken beginning.

Teach it. Then check.

Objective

Match P/p and identify the selected /p/ beginnings.

Check for learning

Ask which begins like panda: pan or moon. Can the learner then choose p from p and m?

Make it more accessible

Use two clear case choices and only two familiar oral examples.

Extend when ready

Build pan with known a/n, then change p to m and blend man.

Try it at home

Draw a pretend picnic and have a grown-up label pan. Find P/p in a familiar book while naming the whole word.

ON SCREEN

Match the forms. Then try the word.
