A 5–10 MINUTE ACTIVITY
Find the qu team
Use the displayed picture, two or three large paper letter cards and a familiar spoken example. No independent word reading is required. Begin with a modeled turn; stop or simplify if the task becomes a vocabulary or motor challenge.
Name queen, quick and quilt, and show Q/q. First check the case pair without a sound demand.
Place q beside u on paper and say the beginning of queen slowly: /k/ then /w/. Explain that these letters often work together in these words.
Find qu in the three printed examples with adult help. Keep an unfamiliar word as a vocabulary discussion rather than a failed decoding test.
Teach it. Then check.
Objective
Recognize Q/q and notice the common qu spelling without learning an always-rule.
Check for learning
Can the learner point to Q/q, find u after q in queen and describe that the beginning contains the modeled sound sequence? Recognition alone is a valid earlier target.
Make it more accessible
Keep the objective to matching Q/q beside the queen picture. Save the sound sequence for a ready learner.
Extend when ready
Compare quick and kick with an adult: the /w/ after /k/ changes the spoken beginning.
Try it at home
Read a familiar book with a grown-up and look for qu. Say the complete word; do not assume every word containing q follows the same pattern.
