PICTURE WORD · Star

/s/ in sun and sock

S and s are curved forms at different sizes. Compare the direction with your writing model rather than relying on a decorative picture alone.

A 5–10 MINUTE ACTIVITY

Sun, sock, star

Use the displayed picture, two or three large paper letter cards and a familiar spoken example. No independent word reading is required. Begin with a modeled turn; stop or simplify if the task becomes a vocabulary or motor challenge.

  1. Model /s/ with sun and sock. Name star and notice that another consonant follows its first sound.

  2. Match S and s and place the pair beside the star illustration.

  3. Say sun, ball, sock and star. Let the learner identify the /s/ beginnings, then explain one choice.

Teach it. Then check.

Objective

Recognize S/s and hear /s/ without requiring mastery of the st blend.

Check for learning

Can the learner choose sock rather than moon for the modeled beginning and then find s among s and m?

Make it more accessible

Use sun and sock first and allow a pointed response.

Extend when ready

Compare sun and ship with an adult: the written initial S alone does not make the spoken beginnings identical.

Try it at home

Look for S/s in a shared book. A grown-up can read the words and identify which use the modeled sun sound.

ON SCREEN
