A 5–10 MINUTE ACTIVITY
Tap once for the beginning
Use the displayed picture, two or three large paper letter cards and a familiar spoken example. No independent word reading is required. Begin with a modeled turn; stop or simplify if the task becomes a vocabulary or motor challenge.
Say tap, top and ten. Model only the brief first sound; the learner can tap a large paper card once for a match.
Pair T with t beside the tree picture, separating the letter-name task from the listening task.
Mix tap, moon and ten. Ask the learner to point to t for matching beginnings rather than tapping for every spoken word.
Teach it. Then check.
Objective
Recognize T/t and identify the selected /t/ words with simple initial consonants.
Check for learning
Offer top and sun, then t and m. Can the learner connect the target beginning with t after hearing the models?
Make it more accessible
Use two familiar oral words and one clear letter pair. Do not require the tr blend in tree.
Extend when ready
With known a/p, build tap and compare map, changing one initial letter.
Try it at home
Use a grown-up-written top or tap label and locate T/t. Keep the whole-word meaning in the conversation.
