A 5–10 MINUTE ACTIVITY
Up and under
Use the displayed picture, two or three large paper letter cards and a familiar spoken example. No independent word reading is required. Begin with a modeled turn; stop or simplify if the task becomes a vocabulary or motor challenge.
Move a paper card up, then put it under a book while saying the words. Model the first vowel in up.
Match U and u beside the umbrella illustration. Name the letter separately from the short-vowel example.
Say up, sun and under. Ask the learner to identify the modeled vowel beginning with a card or a pointed choice.
Teach it. Then check.
Objective
Pair U/u and connect selected short-u examples with the letter.
Check for learning
Can the learner match U/u and choose up rather than moon after hearing the modeled examples?
Make it more accessible
Use the action up and one contrasting word before the longer umbrella word.
Extend when ready
Compare up and use with an adult, showing that the same written letter can represent different vowels.
Try it at home
Use up during ordinary play, then find U/u in a shared book and have a grown-up read the complete word.
