PICTURE WORD · Volcano

/v/ at the start of volcano

V and v meet at a lower point. Compare them with U/u and notice the pointed versus curved printed forms.

A 5–10 MINUTE ACTIVITY

A van visits the volcano

Use the displayed picture, two or three large paper letter cards and a familiar spoken example. No independent word reading is required. Begin with a modeled turn; stop or simplify if the task becomes a vocabulary or motor challenge.

  1. Name van and volcano and model their beginning. If volcano is unfamiliar, briefly discuss the picture first.

  2. Pair V and v, then draw a simple route for a paper van to the picture.

  3. Say van, sun and vet. Move the v card along the route for the target examples and explain a choice.

Teach it. Then check.

Objective

Recognize V/v and hear the selected /v/ beginnings.

Check for learning

Offer van and moon orally and V/v and M/m visually. Can the learner connect the sound example to the case pair?

Make it more accessible

Use van and two visually different case pairs. Do not require the long picture word as an independent spoken answer.

Extend when ready

Compare fan and van with an adult, keeping the distinction a supported listening task.

Try it at home

Look for V/v on a vehicle label or in a book and read the whole word together.
