PICTURE WORD · Zebra

/z/ at the start of zebra

Z and z combine horizontal and slanting parts. Compare the direction using the displayed form rather than a remembered decorative picture alone.

A 5–10 MINUTE ACTIVITY

Zip along a zebra path

Use the displayed picture, two or three large paper letter cards and a familiar spoken example. No independent word reading is required. Begin with a modeled turn; stop or simplify if the task becomes a vocabulary or motor challenge.

  1. Name zebra, zip and zoo and model their initial /z/. Accept the family’s familiar letter name.

  2. Pair Z and z on a paper zigzag path. Trace with a finger or move a card without requiring handwriting.

  3. Say zip, sun and zoo. Move the z card for the target beginnings and explain the nonmatch.

Teach it. Then check.

Objective

Pair Z/z and identify the chosen /z/ examples while accepting familiar accent and letter-name differences.

Check for learning

Can the learner choose zoo rather than moon, then locate z from z and m after seeing both forms?

Make it more accessible

Use two named examples and allow a pointed or partner-assisted response.

Extend when ready

Compare sip and zip with an adult if the spoken contrast is familiar; keep letter knowledge separate from speech-production accuracy.

Try it at home

Look for Z/z in a shared book and have a grown-up read its word. A zebra drawing can remind the learner of the case pair.

ON SCREEN

Match the forms. Then try the word.

Choose capital/lowercase matching or the first written letter of a named picture word. Both are separate from the sound-listening activity above.
