PICTURE WORD · Apple

Short a, as in apple and ant

Capital A has a pointed top. Lowercase a can look different in book type and handwriting; compare the displayed form with your classroom writing model.

A 5–10 MINUTE ACTIVITY

An apple-and-ant listening mat

Use the displayed picture, two or three large paper letter cards and a familiar spoken example. No independent word reading is required. Begin with a modeled turn; stop or simplify if the task becomes a vocabulary or motor challenge.

  1. Say apple, ant and sun while the learner listens without looking at print. Repeat apple slowly enough to hear its beginning.

  2. Place a paper A/a card beside the apple picture. Say the name A, then model the short sound in apple. Invite the learner to point to the matching case partner.

  3. Say ant, sun and apple in a new order. Move the A/a card toward words beginning like apple, then say which word did not belong.

Teach it. Then check.

Objective

Recognize A/a and connect the selected short-a example with the written letter.

Check for learning

Show A/a and M/m. Say ant. Can the learner select A/a and explain that ant begins like apple? Model again if they choose by picture alone.

Make it more accessible

Use just apple and one familiar contrasting word. The learner may point instead of producing the sound.

Extend when ready

Compare apple with apron after the short-a set is comfortable. Both begin with written A, although their vowel sounds differ.

Try it at home

Find an A or a in a food label with a grown-up. Read the whole word aloud; do not assume every A on the label uses the apple sound.

ON SCREEN

Match the forms. Then try the word.

Choose capital/lowercase matching or the first written letter of a named picture word. Both are separate from the sound-listening activity above.
