PICTURE WORD · Ball

/b/ at the start of ball

Capital B has two rounded parts. Lowercase b has a tall stem and a rounded body; place b and d together only when the learner is ready to compare them.

A 5–10 MINUTE ACTIVITY

Pack a pretend B bag

Use the displayed picture, two or three large paper letter cards and a familiar spoken example. No independent word reading is required. Begin with a modeled turn; stop or simplify if the task becomes a vocabulary or motor challenge.

  1. Show a bag and say bag, ball and bed. Ask what the grown-up’s mouth does at the beginning of each word.

  2. Put B and b cards beside the ball picture. Choose which card belongs with each case partner before sorting words.

  3. Pretend to pack ball and bag, leaving out sun. Ask the learner to say or point to the beginning they heard rather than remembering the order.

Teach it. Then check.

Objective

Match B with b and recognize /b/ in familiar spoken words.

Check for learning

Offer ball, sun and bag orally. Can the learner identify two /b/ beginnings, then choose b from b and m?

Make it more accessible

Use objects or clear pictures and supply their names first. Do not require independent word reading.

Extend when ready

Build bat with known letter cards, then change b to m and compare bat/mat orally.

Try it at home

While putting toys away, name one ball or block and look for B/b in a shared book. Accept a pointed response.
