Locate points with ordered pairs
The idea
The origin is (0, 0), where the two axes meet.
Step by step
- The origin is (0, 0), where the two axes meet.
- In (x, y), find x along the horizontal axis, then y along the vertical direction.
- Keep the order: switching x and y usually names a different point.
Example
On a coordinate grid, start at (0, 0), move 3 units right and 4 units up. What ordered pair names the final point?
Answer
(3, 4)
The first coordinate records horizontal movement: x = 3. The second records vertical movement: y = 4. The point is (3, 4).
