Introduce a list with a colon

The idea

For these list introductions, the words before the colon must stand as a complete sentence; do not split a verb from its objects.

Step by step
  1. Read the words before the proposed colon on their own.
  2. Keep the complete introducing clause intact.
  3. Place the colon before the list, avoiding a colon directly after a verb that needs the list to complete it.

Example

Introduce this list: Bring three items. The items are a pencil, paper and a ruler.

Which sentence correctly introduces a list with a colon?

Answer

Bring three items: a pencil, paper and a ruler.

Bring three items is a complete command; the colon introduces the items.
