Remove redundancy without losing meaning

The idea

Cut words that repeat an idea already expressed, but keep qualifications, quantities and relationships that matter.

Step by step
  1. Identify the precise meaning the sentence must retain.
  2. Find a word or phrase that merely repeats another part.
  3. Choose a shorter revision and check that it does not add certainty or remove important detail.

Example

Revise “Each and every sample was labeled” without changing its meaning.

Answer

Every sample was labeled.

Every preserves the universal scope; each and every repeats that scope.
