Preserve scope in a faithful paraphrase

LET’S TRY ONE

In one classroom trial, six of eight bean seeds had germinated by day seven. The class did not test a second batch.

Which paraphrase preserves the source’s scope?

Six of the eight seeds in this single trial germinated within seven days.

The source reports six of eight in one trial by day seven. It does not establish a universal rate or the first day of growth.

Your turn!
Learning steps & teaching tips

Restate a short source while preserving its quantities, limits, uncertainty, and attribution.

  1. Underline the limits and attribution in the source.
  2. Compare each restatement with those exact limits.
  3. Reject a version that adds certainty, people, dates, or findings the source does not give.

Try it together

Write one faithful paraphrase and one that subtly overstates the same source. Explain which word changes the claim.

Compare who, how many, when, and how certain. A fluent sentence can still enlarge a source beyond its evidence.
