Compare process designs using output and waste
The idea
Keep the input basis and measurement method consistent when comparing process trials.
Step by step
- Keep the input basis and measurement method consistent when comparing process trials.
- Check the minimum desired-product requirement before optimizing waste.
- Choose only against the stated measures; safety, energy and other impacts need their own evidence.
Example
Only desired product and one recorded waste stream are shown; other material is not listed. Process A: 85 g desired product; 12 g recorded waste. Process B: 90 g desired product; 18 g recorded waste. Process C: 75 g desired product; 5 g recorded waste.
These controlled model trials use the same input amount. The process must make at least 80 g of desired product. Which eligible process has the least recorded waste?
Answer
Process A
First keep processes making at least 80 g. Among them, Process A has the smallest recorded waste. Other costs or hazards would require additional criteria.
