Build a qualified historical synthesis

LET’S TRY ONE

A budget shows a hall was funded; a dated photograph shows its opening; neither records daily attendance. Which synthesis is supported?

The hall was funded and opened, but daily attendance is not established.

The sources establish funding and opening while leaving attendance unmeasured.

Your turn!
Learning steps & teaching tips

Integrate evidence with different scopes, origins and uncertainties into a conclusion no broader than the sources support.

  1. Make a claim-evidence table for each source.
  2. Check independence, coverage and apparent contradictions.
  3. Write a synthesis that includes both supported conclusions and important uncertainty.

Try it together

Write three short invented records about a town project: an account, a budget and a diary. Synthesize one supported claim and one unresolved question.

Preserve agreements, differences and missing evidence instead of forcing every source into one simple story.
