Grade 11 · Introductory Spanish

Replace an object with lo, la, los or las

The idea

Identify the direct object: what is read, opened, bought, watched, prepared or drawn.

Step by step
  1. Identify the direct object: what is read, opened, bought, watched, prepared or drawn.
  2. Use lo for a masculine singular object, la for feminine singular, los for masculine plural and las for feminine plural.
  3. Place that pronoun immediately before the conjugated verb in these simple statements, keeping the subject and verb form.

Example

Replace only the direct-object noun phrase with a pronoun: Yo leo el libro.

Answer

Yo lo leo.

el libro is masculine singular, so use lo. In this simple finite-verb sentence, the pronoun goes immediately before the verb: Yo lo leo.
