A 5–10 MINUTE ACTIVITY
Make a dog’s dot trail
Use the displayed picture, two or three large paper letter cards and a familiar spoken example. No independent word reading is required. Begin with a modeled turn; stop or simplify if the task becomes a vocabulary or motor challenge.
Say dog and dot beside the dog picture. Let the learner hear the shared beginning before seeing the written words.
Match D with d. Place three large paper dots in a trail and move the d card once for each grown-up example beginning /d/.
Mix dog, moon, dot and dig. Stop at moon and explain why it does not begin like dog.
Teach it. Then check.
Objective
Pair D/d and listen for /d/ in a short familiar set.
Check for learning
Say dot and sun. Can the learner indicate the /d/ word, then find d among d and m?
Make it more accessible
Use two words and model the first comparison. Keep b out of the choice set initially if direction is distracting.
Extend when ready
With familiar sounds, compare dog and dig orally. The initial /d/ stays while the middle vowel changes.
Try it at home
Draw a dog and three dots. Ask a grown-up to write D and d beside the drawing and read the labels together.
